This fall, elegance takes a haunting turn with Fairmont Hotel Vancouver’s Haunted Cellar Afternoon Tea. Beneath the hotel’s storied walls, guests are welcomed into a gothic-inspired setting of flickering candlelight and supernatural touches. The menu features savoury bites like a sausage roll with beet ketchup, tuna tartare with pine nuts and “black magic” aioli, and an autumn fig tart with caramelized onions, rosemary, and brie. Sweet creations include the decadent “Midnight Burial” milk chocolate mousse with bitter brownie and cherries, a New York cheesecake with raspberry gel and spooky garnish, and the whimsical “Bewitched” caramel pecan cupcake topped with a witch’s hat. A chillingly delightful twist on a timeless tradition.

The brewery is drawing from the tragic history of the area. In 1899, False Creek extended from Main Street to where the brewhouse sits today. The East Bridge connected farmlands to the south side of the city and to the north, Gastown. The bridge collapsed, killing nine people. According to Strange Fellows, some of those killed were a team of brewers making a beer delivery to Gassy Jack’s Saloon in Gastown. The ghosts of brewers who perished have returned, creating a disturbing presence in the brewery.
